Delhi Votes for Change: BJP’s Big Comeback After 27 Years

  • by

In a dramatic political turnaround, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has returned to power in Delhi after 27 years, securing 48 out of 70 seats in the 2025 Assembly Elections. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which dominated Delhi politics for over a decade, managed to win only 22 seats, while the Congress failed to open its account once again.

Election Overview

The Election Commission of India scheduled the polls for February 5, 2025, with results declared on February 8. Out of over 1.55 crore voters, Delhi recorded a 60.44% turnout across 13,033 polling stations. Despite a fairly average turnout, the results delivered a clear mandate for change.

Key Players and Contest

  • AAP, in power since 2013, faced heavy anti-incumbency. CM Atishi, appointed just months before the polls, couldn’t save the party from sliding. Several top AAP leaders including Arvind Kejriwal (New Delhi), Manish Sisodia, and Saurabh Bharadwaj lost to BJP candidates.
  • BJP, after years in opposition, ran a sharp campaign focused on corruption, governance failure, and pollution under AAP. It fielded 68 candidates, with 2 seats allotted to allies JDU and LJP.
  • Congress fielded candidates on all 70 seats but continued its decline. Notably, Sandeep Dikshit, son of former CM Sheila Dikshit, lost from New Delhi.

Core Campaign Issues

The elections revolved around several key concerns:

  • Corruption Allegations: AAP faced serious charges, including the liquor scam and the Sheeshmahal residence controversy. Arrests of senior leaders hurt its clean image.
  • Governance Breakdown: Ongoing tussles with the Lieutenant Governor over administrative control weakened AAP’s governance record.
  • Pollution and Infrastructure: Delhi’s air quality and unfulfilled promises like cleaning the Yamuna river contributed to voter dissatisfaction.
  • Welfare vs Freebies: AAP’s promise of direct cash transfers to women sparked a broader debate on the sustainability of welfare schemes.
  • Election Results & Major Upsets

    • The BJP increased its vote share by 7%, while AAP saw a 10% decline. Notable defeats included:
    • Arvind Kejriwal lost to Parvesh Verma by 4,089 votes.
    • Manish Sisodia, Saurabh Bharadwaj, and Somnath Bharti were also defeated.
    • Atishi retained her seat in Kalkaji with a narrow margin of 3,521 votes.

Rekha Gupta: Delhi’s New Chief Minister

In a landmark move, BJP appointed Rekha Gupta as Delhi’s Chief Minister — a first-time MLA with a background in student politics and municipal governance. Her appointment underscores BJP’s push for women leadership and ideological continuity, backed by her close ties to the RSS and ABVP.

The new cabinet features caste and regional balance, including Jats, Dalits, Sikhs, Brahmins, and Purvanchalis, showcasing BJP’s strategic outreach.

    Conclusion

The 2025 Delhi elections marked a historic shift in the capital’s politics. Voters opted for change, rejecting AAP’s governance amid scandals. BJP’s return opens a new chapter under Rekha Gupta’s leadership, with challenges ahead in tackling pollution, infrastructure, and public trust. Meanwhile, AAP faces a tough road to revival.
