Pahalgam Attack 2025: A Deadly Assault on Kashmir’s Baisaran Valley

On April 22, 2025, a devastating terrorist attack unfolded in the Baisaran Valley near Pahalgam, Anantnag district, Jammu and Kashmir. Five heavily armed militants targeted a group of tourists, resulting in the deaths of 26 individuals and injuries to 20 others. This incident stands as one of the deadliest attacks on civilians in India since the 2008 Mumbai attacks.

Details of the Attack: The assailants, equipped with AK-47s and M4 carbines, infiltrated the scenic Baisaran Valley, a popular tourist destination surrounded by dense pine forests. Their primary targets were Hindu tourists, although a Christian tourist and a local Muslim were also among the victims. The attackers opened fire indiscriminately, causing chaos and panic among the visitors. The Resistance Front (TRF), believed to be an offshoot of the Pakistan-based terrorist group Lashkar-e-Taiba, claimed responsibility for the attack. They stated that the assault was in opposition to the settlement of non-locals in the region following the revocation of Jammu and Kashmir’s special status. 

Immediate Aftermath and Operation Sindoor: In response to the Pahalgam attack, the Indian government launched “Operation Sindoor” on May 7, 2025. This military operation involved precision airstrikes targeting nine terrorist camps across Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, including locations in Bahawalpur, Muridke, Muzaffarabad, and Kotli. The Indian Army released footage showcasing drone interceptions and precision strikes, emphasizing the nation’s capability to counter terrorist threats effectively. 

International and Domestic Reactions: The attack drew widespread condemnation both domestically and internationally. Indian leaders across the political spectrum denounced the violence and called for unity against terrorism. International figures, including U.S. President Joe Biden, Russian President Vladimir Putin, and EU Chief Ursula von der Leyen, expressed their condolences and support for India’s fight against terrorism. 

Investigations and Arrests: Indian intelligence agencies initiated a thorough investigation into the attack. One significant development was the arrest of YouTuber Jyoti Malhotra, who was suspected of having links to the attackers. Reports indicated that she had visited Pahalgam shortly before the attack and subsequently traveled to Pakistan, raising suspicions about her involvement. Authorities are examining her connections and activities to determine any potential role in facilitating the attack.

Impact on Regional Stability: The Pahalgam attack and the subsequent military operations heightened tensions between India and Pakistan. The cross-border strikes and retaliations led to civilian casualties and displacement in the border regions. A fragile ceasefire was eventually brokered, but the incident underscored the volatile nature of the region and the ever-present threat of terrorism.
